Virgin River has never been short on heartbreak, but the latest surprise departure has fans reeling. Season 6, which dropped on Netflix in December, not only tied up some long-awaited storylines but also bid farewell to Dr. Cameron Hayek — the charming physician played by Mark Ghanimé. After three seasons in the small town, Cameron’s arc came to a quiet end, but showrunner Patrick Sean Smith insists that door may not be closed forever.
The Doctor Is Out
Introduced in Season 4, Ghanimé’s Cameron was meant to shake things up at Doc’s clinic. Initially positioned as a potential love interest for Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), Cameron quickly won viewers over with his good looks, steady demeanor, and complicated romantic history.
When his chemistry with Mel fizzled, the writers found new ground for him with Muriel (Teryl Rothery). Their unexpected romance became one of the show’s sweetest late-in-life love stories. But in true Virgin River fashion, things got complicated: Cameron’s ex returned, Muriel faced a breast cancer diagnosis, and the couple’s future became uncertain.
By the end of Season 6, Cameron and Muriel’s relationship had reached a bittersweet crossroads — and Cameron himself quietly bowed out of Virgin River.
Showrunner Confirms His Exit
Speaking to Us Weekly after the Season 6 premiere, Patrick Sean Smith confirmed that Ghanimé will not return for Season 7.
“I love that relationship, and I think this season saw a little bit of a sendoff for Cameron,” Smith revealed. “Mark, the actor who I adore, unfortunately won’t be coming back for Season 7.”
But Smith wasn’t ready to call it a permanent goodbye. “That’s not to say that Cameron’s not a part of our world forever,” he added. “I would love to bring him back, and bring his character back when the story presents itself.”
That tease has left fans clinging to hope that Dr. Hayek could return to the clinic one day.
What His Departure Means for the Story
Cameron’s exit will inevitably reshape several storylines. For Muriel, the loss of her partner comes at a time when she needs support the most. Her ongoing cancer battle has been one of the show’s most poignant arcs, and fans are eager to see whether she’ll lean on Doc, Hope, or another unexpected confidant in Season 7.
For Doc’s clinic, Cameron’s absence also creates a practical gap. With Doc slowing down due to his health struggles and Denny only just beginning his career, who will step in to help Mel carry the load? Could Season 7 introduce a brand-new doctor — or will Cameron eventually return when the time is right?
Season 6 Cliffhangers Keep Fans Hooked
Even as Cameron’s story wound down, Virgin River Season 6 left viewers with plenty of juicy cliffhangers. Mel and Jack finally tied the knot, only to face a shocking twist when a local teen asked Mel to adopt her baby. Elsewhere, Brie found herself caught in a love triangle after rekindling things with Brady, only for her boyfriend Mike to propose.
“A good love triangle is only as strong as the options you’re presenting,” Smith explained. “Imagining what Brie’s future could look like with Brady compared to what it could look like with Mike… that’s where it works really well.”
Could Cameron Return in Season 7 (or Beyond)?
While Ghanimé’s official exit has been confirmed, Virgin River’s history suggests nothing is ever truly final. Characters often drift in and out of the small town, returning when least expected. And given how much love fans have for Cameron and Muriel’s relationship, it wouldn’t be surprising if he showed up again — even if just for closure.
For now, though, fans will have to brace themselves for a Season 7 without Dr. Hayek. As the series continues to balance romance, drama, and the unexpected, Virgin River proves once again that saying goodbye to beloved characters is part of what keeps the story so achingly human.
