‘Chicago P.D.’ Showrunner Teases Burzek’s Life After Marriage in Season 13: “What Comes Next?”

Chicago P.D. Season 13 finds Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) a married couple. Following their intimate wedding in the Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale, the couple is now officially together. Their journey to this stage has been long and turbulent, so it’s only befitting that they enjoy this stage of their life together. “They’re happy,” showrunner Gwen Sigan said in a new interview, previewing what’s on the horizon for the couple popularly known as Burzek. “They’re kind of in that honeymoon phase of still being really excited about the wedding and being happy together,” she added.

However, outside their cocoon of happiness, nothing is the same. Intelligence Unit is being scrutinized after the death of Deputy Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy) and the entire unit has been disbanded for a month now. That’s the only blight in their otherwise happy existence. “Their lives are a little more complicated at the moment with work, but the two of them are very strong and happy together and that’s something we want to continue to look at: Now you’re married, you have this great family unit, but what comes next?” Sigan shared.

The showrunner did not share much about what was on the horizon for the characters, either individually or as a couple. However, she teased a deeper exploration of their surroundings, especially in their neighborhood. The last time viewers saw something about the Burzek neighborhood was in Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 16, “Seen and Unseen,” which tested Burgess’ memory after a deadly incident at the local diner, one that she regularly frequents. A shootout left several people dead, and Kim was the only one with knowledge of the people who were in it on that fateful night.
